Mrs. Grace Oletta Hutton Preston 1884-1947

Funeral services for Mrs. George Preston who died at her home here last Thursday evening, November 6, following a brief illness were held from the Presbyterian church Sunday at 2 p.m. The Rev. John M. DeBerg officiated at the services. Burial was in Graceland cemetery.

Grace Oletta Hutton was born April 3, 1884, the daughter of James W. Hutton and his wife Jane Morris at Atlantic. She was one of a family of ten children.

She attended the Atlantic schools and was a member of the Methodist church there. As a young lady she sang in the church choir and did solo work at many social affairs.

On July 6, 1904, she was married to George W. Preston of Anita where Mr. Preston was in the clothing business. On March 12, 1908, a son, Paul Hutton Preston was born. One year later, Mr. Preston sold his clothing business and came to Avoca where he established a clothing store.

Mr. and Mrs. Preston built a new home in Avoca in 1912 in which they have lived since that time. A daughter, Ruth Amelia Preston, was born on February 20, 1913.

Since coming to Avoca, Mrs. Preston was a member of the Presbyterian Church, sang in the choir and was active in the organizations of the church to which she was so faithful in her attendance. She was past matron in the O.E.S., a past president and charter member of the chapter GC of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and a past worthy priestess of the White Shrine. She helped organize and was president of the Avoca and vicinity Republican Club.

She was the proud grandmother of Debra Dee and Robert Pilling, and John, Robert, and Susan Preston. She was never more happy than when doing something for them.

About two weeks ago she was taken ill and with the best of care and everything that could be done for her she suddenly passed away on Thursday, November 6, 1947 at about 7:45 in the evening.

She leaves to mourn besides her husband, children, and grandchildren, her sisters Mrs. B.D. Forshay, Mrs. Edward Schroeder, Mrs. Fred Herbert, Mrs. G. M. Adair, Mrs. Lulu Gotch and many relatives and a host of friends.
