Pioneer Avoca Businessman is Called to Death

One of the oldest businessmen in Avoca, Hermann Seiffert, died at the home of his granddaughter while on a Thanksgiving Day visit in Muscatine on Friday, November 25 (1949). Mr. Seiffert suffered a stroke on Thanksgiving Day and was taken to a Muscatine hospital where he died the next morning. He reached the age of 84 years, 1 month and 29 days.

Funeral services were held from the First Lutheran church Sunday, November 27 at 2 pm with the Rev Joseph Gerlt officiating. Burial was in the Graceland cemetery.

Mr. Seiffert was well known in Avoca and surrounding towns, coming here from Germany in 1882. During his many years in the lumber business here he made many friends among farmers and people in Avoca and surrounding towns. He was noted for his honesty in all transactions and his word on a deal was as good as a written promise.

Hermann Seiffert, a son of Otto Seiffert and his wife Gretchan Schneckloth, was born in Schoenberg Holstein, Germany on September 25, 1865. He came to America and the Avoca community when a young man in 1882. Some years later he became associated with his brother H. O. Seiffert in the lumber business in Avoca. At one time Hermann looked after yards in 8 towns around Avoca. His brother later went to Davenport where his family still is in the lumber business.

On November 9, 1899, he was married to Clara Hagedo (rest illegible). To this union one daughter, Meta, was born.

Preceding him in death was his daughter on January 10, 1933 and his wife on May 31, 1933.

His only immediate survivor is a granddaughter Margaret Ann Siemers of Muscatine.
