Albert “Tab” Russell
Fatally Injured When Struck By Car
Accident Happened Near Fairgrounds

Albert “Tab” Russell, 64, Avoca, was fatally injured Sunday when struck by a car while walking on Highway 59 near the south city limits of Avoca. He was injured at 10 am and died at 1:30 pm at the Council Bluffs hospital. He is the 15th traffic fatality in Pottawattamie this year.

Driver of the car that struck Russell was Mrs. Frances Jacobsen, 32, of Hancock. She was enroute to church at the time. Mrs. Jacobsen told Deputy Sheriff Robert Clark she was driving about 30 miles an hour when she met a car coming from the north. She said as the south bound car passed, Russell suddenly turned to the left and walked onto the highway in the path of her car. He was knocked into the ditch. He suffered a broken leg and a skull fracture.

Chet Ballantine, Avoca, driving a car following Mrs. Jacobsen, substantiated her version of the accident. Coroner Stanley Woodring of Council Bluffs said that no inquest would be held and termed Russell’s death accidental.

Russell, a native of Wilmington Illinois, lived most of his life in Avoca. He was a carpenter for many years. Surviving are two brothers: Frank of Avoca and Edward Russell of Kansas City, Missouri.

Services were held Tuesday at 2 pm at the Blust-Berthusen funeral home. Burial was in Graceland cemetery.
