Services Held in Avoca Sunday

Last rites for Jacob Petersen, Avoca grocer, 71, were held from the Blust-Berthusen funeral home in Avoca Sunday, May 4 (1947) at 2 pm with the Rev. John M. DeBerg officiating.

Mr. Petersen died at his home in Avoca following a long illness on Friday, May 2. He was 71 years, 5 months, and 16 days old at the time of his death.

Jacob Petersen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Petersen was born on a farm near Avoca, on November 16, 1875. On December 4, 1901, he was united in marriage to Leora Ellen Rold who preceded him in death in 1927. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. John Pittman of Avoca.

Mr. Petersen spent his boyhood days on a farm near Avoca, and then came to town where he spent the rest of his life in business activities, operating a grocery store for the past 28 years. Mr. Petersen was active at his place of business until august of 1946 when ill health forced him to retire.

The deceased was held in high esteem by his fellow townsmen and the many patrons whom he had served for many years. He leaves to mourn his death, one daughter, Mrs. John Pittmann of Avoca; three sisters: Mrs. Lester Smith, Mrs. Henry Karstens, and Mrs. Roy Hetzel all of Avoca, and one brother, D.P Petersen also of Avoca.

Three sisters, Molly, Lena and Emma and two brothers, Anton and Christian preceded him in death.

He also leaves to mourn many nieces and nephews and a host of other near relatives and friends.

Mr. Petersen was of a kind disposition and always ready to give a helping hand where needed.
