CHARITON - The funeral for Marion M. Coons, 87, of Chariton will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton.
Mr. Coons died Jan. 26 at The Village in Indianola from complications of a stroke.
He was born April 11, 1915, in Macedonia to Lindsey D. and Luella May (McDowell) Coons. He was an accountant and worked for Hy-Vee in Chariton for 50 years. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1938. He moved to Chariton in 1946 from Lamoni. He was Rotary president in 1955. He was a member of Masonic Lodge, serving as Master of the Lamoni lodge in 1945; Eastern Star; and Shrine. He was named Chariton Citizen of the year in 1971. He was a Hyde & Viedenburg accountant 1940-43, and secretary-treasurer 1943-55. He was senior vice president and CFO at Hy-Vee 1955-89. He served on the Chariton City Council 1954-60; Chariton School Board 1961-70; and was chairman of Lucas County Republicans 1961-81. He enjoyed reading, travel and the Hawkeyes.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret L. (McReynolds); two sons, Kenneth Lee Coons and Kenton Richard Coons, both of Chariton; one sister, Catherine Snapp, of Aurora, Ill.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Visitation with the family will be tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Chariton Cemetery.
Memorials may be offered to First United Methodist Church in Chariton, Lucas County Humane Society or Macedonia Historical Preservation Society, 38038 Aspen Road, Macedonia.
