Ed Wineland

Ed Wineland, the son of Jacob and Mary Wineland, was born in Brooklyn, Powshiek county, Iowa, September 25th, 1855 and passed away at his late home southeast of Avoca, December 25th, 1934, at the age of 79 years and 3 months.

Mr. Wineland moved here with his parents, from Brooklyn, Iowa, when he was only a few months old, to the old homestead which is now occupied by Ira Derby. They lived in a log house for many years, coming here with ox teams as that was their only means of transportation in those days.

As a young man Mr. Wineland assisted in hauling the grain and hogs with ox teams to Council Bluffs markets. This required several days to make the trip.

He was educated in a log school house. Later he moved to Oakland, Iowa, where he operated a store for two years after which he sold out and moved back home where he remained until his marriage.

He was united in marriage to Ida Judd on March 14rh, 1883. This union was blessed with two children, Glen and Rose.

Ed Wineland’s interests were centered in stock-raising, for which he received many prizes at the state fair each year. The Avoca Fair Association also found in him a helpful friend. Mr. Wineland was a great lover of his home, flowers and trees of which he was justly proud. The cause of education always found in him a firm and helpful friend, in that he served as school director for 12 years.

Fraternally, he was connected with the Odd Fellows Lodge No. 220 at Avoca, while he and his wife were members of the Rebekah lodge the greater part of their married life.

He also affiliated with the First Congregational Church at Avoca.

Mr. Wineland has been quite helpless for the past few years and bedfast for the last three months. Mrs. Wineland died eight years ago. He was also preceded in death by his father, mother, four sisters and two brothers.
Left to mourn his passing are: one son, Glen of Woodbine, Iowa; one daughter, Mrs. Rose Schaff with whom he made his home, three grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Samantha Hines of Avoca.

Funeral services will be held from his late home Friday afternoon at 2 pm, December 28, 1934. Rev Earl E Remaly officiating. Burial in the family lot at Graceland cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.
