Death of a Pioneer

James Duncan, one of the pioneer settlers of this section, passed away Monday at his home in Hancock, Iowa, after a short illness with the flu and was buried Wednesday in the Hancock cemetery.
James Duncan was born at New Park, Pennsylvania and came to Avoca in the late seventies and for many years he worked on the farm. Later, he engaged in the live stock business. He was one of the best known men in that section. He was a very large man, weighing over 300 pounds, the best natured individual one could wish to meet. He thought a great deal of his old friends and associates, he always looked on the bright side of life and never complained of h is condition. James Duncan was a fine gentlemen, a good citizen and neighbor. His familiar figure will be missed and his many good deeds will be remembered for years by those who were benefitted.

James Duncan leaves a good and faithful wife, one son, Earl Duncan of Gregory, SD, and four daughters; Mrs. Joe Fehl of Summett, SD; Mrs. Bessie Brochet of Wambaugh, SD, Miss Eva Duncan, and Mrs. P. E. O’ Neill of Hancock to mourn his loss. The bereaved family have the entire sympathy of their large circle of friends.
