Mrs. Carl Gustafsen

Mrs. Carl Gustafsen, nee Maren Andersen, departed this life Thursday January 7, 1937, age 66 years, 2 months, and 15 days. Born in Jutland, Denmark, October 22, 1870, she came to this country at the age of 16, settling near Marne with an uncle and aunt, with whom she stayed and for whom she worked until her marriage in 1880 to Carl Gustafsen. Mr. and Mrs. Gustafsen lived on a farm near Marne until 1908, when they moved to the farm southeast of Avoca, where they have resided until Mr. Gustafsen died in 1929, January 9. Mrs. Gustafsen has continued to live on the farm until now. Her death came unexpectedly after a brief illness, while she was in attendance at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lena Wiese, helping out because of illness in the home.
She leaves to mourn her passing the following children: Mrs. Anna Sarvis, Mrs. Emma Sorensen, Mrs. Lily Burgin, Mrs. Sarah Jacobsen, Mrs. Lena Wiese and Daniel Gustafsen, living in and around Avoca; Mrs. Stena Christensen of Atlantic, Ia. Chris, Fred, Elva, and Carl living at home. A twelfth child, Mrs. Esther Nelson, died some years ago. A sister, Mrs. Chris Christensen, Elkhorn, Iowa and a brother living at Portage, WA, as well as eleven grandchildren and host of friends also pause to mourn her death.

Funeral services were held Saturday January 9 at 2 pm from the Blust Funeral home in Avoca, with Rev. E. Christensen of the English Lutheran Church officiating. Mrs. Alvin Christensen at the piano. Interment in the Avoca cemetery. Because of her contact with a contagious disease, the service at the funeral home was held with the body absent.
