Josephine Wiseman was born at Princeton, Iowa, October 22, 1859 and passed away at her home in Avoca, September 28, 1939.
She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John (Barbara Goler) Wiseman, natives of Saxony, who became residents of Pleasant township, Pottawattamie Country. She became the wife of Dominick Gross, April 17, 1877, a young Pleasant township farmer who had migrated from Alsace, Germany in his childhood. Together Mr. and Mrs. Gross prospered in a financial way and became leaders of this agricultural community. Mr. Gross became a breeder of fine Hereford cattle and was one of the few men who really made a success of the business.
Mr. and Mrs. Gross continued to live on their Pleasant township farm until he was claimed by death September 25, 1923. Mrs. Gross continued on the farm until eight years ago when she moved to the home in Avoca where she passed away.
Mr. and Mrs. Gross became the parents of nine children, eight of whom survive them. They are: Charles who died in 1900; George of Shelby; William, Frank and Clarence of Avoca; Mrs. Mary Doll; Mrs. Harry Sarvis, Mrs. Guy Donaldson and Mrs. Dan Gustafsen of Avoca; aside from the children, seventeen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one brother, William Wiseman of Logan, survive.
Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Church Saturday with Rev Father Cashman officiating. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery.
Attending the service from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wermerskirchen and Mrs. Joseph Gross of St. James, Minnesota; Mrs. Delia Gross, John, Mary and Julia, and Mr. and Mrs. George McGuire of Wisner, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Dominick Gross of Lincoln, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. John Gross, John and Eugene, of Grand Junction, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Dunne, Ames Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. William Wiseman, Marvin and Homer of Logan, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. George Gross, Walnut, and Mrs. George Gross, Sr. of Omaha.
