Zelda Marie JOHANNSEN passed away on Friday October 17, 2008 at the Avoca Nursing & Rehab Center in Avoca, IA at the age of 93 years, 11 months and 9 days.
Funeral services were held on Monday, October 20 at Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, IA with Rev. Gail Muckey and Wayne Paulsen officiating. Sarah KOCK served as the pianist and Lesey KRUMMEL, Amber McGREEVY and Eric JOHANNSEN were the vocalists. Burial was in the Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut.
Casket bearers were LuAnn JENSEN, John KRUMMEL, Michael KRUMMEL, Bruce KRUMMEL, Eric JOHANNSEN, Sarah FINK, and Reid JOHANNSEN.
Zelda Marie JOHANNSEN, the daughter of Herman C. & Amalia M. (KARSTENS) BURMEISTER, was born on November 8, 1914 near Corley, IA. She attended Fairview Township country school through the eighth grade.
On August 2, 1939 Zelda married Norman Russell JOHANNSEN in Avoca. From 1940 to 1975 the couple farmed in Jackson and Monroe Townships. In 1975 their son, Galan, and his family moved to the farm, and Norman and Zelda moved to an acreage in Monroe Township. They lived there for 10 years before retiring to Harlan.
In May 2007 Zelda became a resident of the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca.
Zelda was an active member of Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut. She was a member of the Farm Bureau Women and was named the Farm Bureau Homemaker of the Year in 1954.
Zelda was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Alvin BURMEISTER and Harry BURMEISTER; and one son-in-law, Willis KRUMMEL.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Norman JOHANNSEN of Harlan; one daughter, JoAnn KRUMMEL of Avoca, one son, Galan (Janet) JOHANNSEN of Harlan; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great- grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
