In Memory: Frederick Grote
The funeral for Frederick Richard Grote, 81, of little Flower Haven Care Center in Earling was Saturday at 10:30 A.M. at St. Michael’s Rosman Parish Center in Harlan with the Rev. Jack McClure officiating.
Mr. Grote died April 30 at the care center.
He was born in Neola. He previously lived I Portsmouth and most recently in Harlan. He attended school in Neola and St. Mary’s Catholic School in Portsmouth. He served in the U.S. Army from Sept 28, 1942, to Dec. 29, 1945. He was a farmer for 26 years.
Following retirement, he worked for Western Pork Plant in Harlan, Shelby Elevator in Shelby and Harlan Community School District. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church; Knights of Columbus, Earling Council No 1741 and American Legion Post No. 547 of Portsmouth.
Mr. Grote and his wife, Loretta, were married 58 years.
Survivors in addition to his wife include four daughters, Jean Jensen and husband, Daryl, of Shelby, Nancy Palmer and husband, Randy, Constance McElderry, all of Council Bluffs and Mary Van Camp and husband, Eric “Bud”, of Harlan; three sons, Gerald and wife, Janis, of Harlan, Mark of Harlan and Ronald and wife, Kimberly, of Washington; one sister, Hilary Gaul, and husband, Peter, of Melborne, Florida; four brothers, Robert and Thomas and wife, Theresa, all of Portsmouth, Raphael and wife, Margaret, of Dunlap and LeRoy and wife, Elizabeth, of Earling; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Wake service was held Friday evening followed by family visitation at Pauley Funeral home in Harlan. Burial was in Harlan Cemetery.
