In Memory: Irene Stender

Irene Elizabeth Stender, 80, of Omaha died January 20 at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha.

She was born on May 13, 1920 near Avoca, one of three children in the family of Willie and Alma Blumer Schuning. She attended country school and graduated from Shelby High School in 1937.

Irene married Paul Stender on February 27, 1941 at the Minden Iowa Congregational Church parsonage. The Stenders lived and farmed in Harrison county North of Minden until Paul’s death on January 2, 1970.

Irene moved to Minden and worked at the Minden Motel and the Kipper Kettle. She moved to an apartment in Omaha, Nebraska in 1980.

Irene enjoyed attending dances and visiting with old and new friends she made. She kept up on current events and trends in farming. Irene loved her family and followed al of their interests and activities including those of her grandnieces and grandnephews. She was an avid reader and spent much of her time doing needlework.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister, Bernice Midyett.

Survivors include a brother, Kenneth Schuning of Council Bluffs, and two nieces, Janice and her husband Jim Boysen of Shelby and Jean and her husband Jerry Aukland of Lincoln, California, great-nieces and great-nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Visitation with the family was held Tuesday evening at Knutson Funeral Home in Avoca. Funeral was to be Wednesday at 10:30 A.M. at the funeral home with the Rev. David Borden officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery.
