Following is the Obituary copied from The Dunlap Reporter dated August 8, 1996:

James Edward "Ed" Rethmeier, age 73, Council Bluffs died Thursday, August 1, 1996, in Omaha, Neb., after a brief illness. He is a native of Dunlap, attended Dunlap High School and was a long time resident of Council Bluffs.

James retired from Omar Bakery after 26 years and then spent ten years with Admiral Merchants Trucking Company. He is a veteran of W.W. II and a life time member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 737 and Dunlap American Legion. He was also a member of Teamsters Union #554 and the Catholic Church.

Survivors include one son, Jim of Council Bluffs; two daughters, Mrs. Gary (Pat) Spanel of Omaha, Neb., and Mrs. Dennis (Barb) McElderry of Council Bluffs; brother, Bill Winters of Atlanta, Ga., and eight grandchildren.

Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 5, at St. Peter’s Church in Council Bluffs. Rev. James Kiernan officiated. Burial was made in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Dunlap. Memorials to Visiting Nurse Association Hospice Program preferred.
