In Memory: Ella A. Osbahr

Ella Adella (Neve) Osbahr, 89, died January 8, 2004 at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Iowa.

Ella was born on September 11, 1914 in Union Township near Persia, Iowa. She was the daughter of Henry and Anna Hendrickson Neve and was one of twelve children in the family. Ella was baptized as Lutheran and was confirmed in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. She attended school in Avoca, Iowa.

Ella was united in marriage to Lloyd Schuning on December 3, 1933 in Minden and there were six children born to this union. Ella married Orville Osbahr on November 24, 1950 in Harlan and four additional children were born.

Ella enjoyed helping and taking care of others. This was seen by the jobs she held. Her first job was at the Harlan Hospital where she was a cook. She then worked for the Fiscus Nursing Home and was employed there for 14 years. She ended her working career at the Avoca Nursing Home.

Her helping and taking care of others did not end after her retirement. She could always be seen baking rye bread, cookies, pies and other goodies for her children, grandchildren and other relatives who came to visit.

She also enjoyed making quilts for all of her children and grandchildren. Mostly, she just loved having her family in for a visit. Her second love was her plants and yard. She spent countless hours grooming her yard and flowerbed on top of the cave. Her hard work was rewarded as she was spotlighted in the Avoca Journal Herald as homemaker of the week.

Ella was preceded in death by her husbands, two daughters; Jacqueline Page and Carol Schnieder, three sons-in-law; Cordon Hansen, David McFerran and Eldon Damgaard, three grandchildren; Don Schnieder, Cindy Osbahr and Debra Page, four sisters and three brothers.

She is survived by eight children; Donna Hansen of Corley, Iowa, Laverne "John" Schuning and his wife Doris and Debarah Stendrup and her husband Jerry, all of Harlan. Bonnie Damgaard of Independence, Iowa, Karen Pope and her husband Claude, Diana Taylor and her husband Dennis and Steve Osbahr and his wife Rita, all of Avoca and Larry Osbahr of Arvada, Colorado; 34 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, three brothers; Henry, Eldean and Milo and two sisters; Marge Neve and Frances Brainard, besides nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Services were held Monday, January 12, at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca with Lay Associate Wayne Paulsen officiating.

Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery.
