In Memory: Alpha M. Haas

Alpha Marie Schnepel Hass was born on June 9, 1916 near Minden, Iowa. She was the daughter of Rudolph and Amanda Dau Schnepel and was one of eight children in the family.

She attended country school and then graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs with the Class of 1934. Alpha and her brother Gifford worked the farm while their parents traveled.

Alpha was united in marriage to Kenneth Haas on March 1, 1939 in Missouri Valley. They farmed in the Minden area until 1955 when they moved to a farm near Guthrie Center. In 1968 they moved to Carroll, living there until 1983 when they moved to Atlantic.

Alpha and Ken loved to travel and were in most all of the United States. She helped on the farm and loved to work in her flower garden. Alpha also enjoyed sewing and crocheting.

In 1993, Alpha became a resident of the Friendship Home in Audubon, for a year. She then returned to her home in Atlantic where Ken took care of her until 1998. She returned to the Friendship Home at that time and remained there until her passing on November 21, 2001. She was 85.

Alpha was preceded in death by their three children: two sons who died as infants and Cheryl who lived one day after her birth; her parents, seven brothers and sisters: Claudius, Ralph and Gifford Schnepel, Linda Danker, Grace Siebels, Vera Schroder and Mildred Nelson.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years. Kenneth, and a sister-in-law Ann Schnepel of Council Bluffs.

Services were held Saturday, November 24 at the Knutson Funeral Chapel with Pastor Denny Peterson officiating. Burial was in the Minden Cemetery.
