In Memory: Herbert Hjortsvang

Herbert A. Hjortsvang, 77, of Council Bluffs died April 10 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital.

He was born January 2, 1924, in Chicago to A.V. and Agnes (Jensen) Hjortsvang. He lived in Fremont, Nebraska, for five years, lived in Omaha for 25 years and in Underwood for seven years before he moved to Council Bluffs 13 years ago. He graduated from Calumet (Illinois) High School in 1942 and from Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, in 1950. He received a master's degree from Creighton University in 1952.

He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II. He worked for 23 years as a teacher and administrator at Boys Town, administrator at Masonic Eastern Home for Boys in Fremont, Nebraska, and worked for the Iowa Department of Human Services in Glenwood for five years.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, American Legion, Rainbow Post No. 2, the Danish Brotherhood in America, Jennie Edmundson Auxiliary, Heartland Hosts, Danish American Venelyst Club and the Pottawattamie County Historical Society. He was a volunteer for the Council Bluffs Convention and Visitors Bureau and theWestern Historic Trails Center.

Mr. Hjortsvang and his wife, Alvina L. (Larsen), were married December 20, 1950.

Survivors in addition to his wife include a daughter, Barbara Repair, and husband, Gary, of Omaha; a son, Paul, of Ellsworth; five grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation with the family will be Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Hering Center at St. John Lutheran Church. Funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the church with the Rev. E.A. Hering and the Rev. Roger Prescott, pastor of visitation, officiating.

Burial will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Boomer Township, with military rites conducted by American Legion Rainbow Post No. 2, followed by lunch at the church. Belford-O'Neill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be offered to the church or Dana College.
