In Memory: Edgar Schmidt

Edgar Alan "Hack" Schmidt, 74, of Avoca died on April 1, 2001 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs.

He was born in Avoca September 22, 1926, the son of Harry and Edna Bergman Schmidt.

Hack started working for John Pittmann in Pittmann's Grocery Store at the age of 7. He attended school and worked for John until he went into the military.

Hack entered the United States Army on November 16, 1944. Upon being discharged on August 8, 1946, he returned to Avoca.

He worked for the State Highway Department for a short time and then returned to work for John Pittmann again in his grocery store.

Hack married Rogena Meier on April 9, 1949 in Council Bluffs and they became the parents of two children, Delores and Jeffrey.

Hack worked in the grocery store until 1961, then went to work for Agri-Land in Avoca. He worked there until reaching retirement age in 1985.

He worked for Burns Brothers in Minden for seven years and then went to work helping his wife Jean with the janitorial duties at A-H-ST High School in Avoca for five years.

Hack collected caps and mugs and loved to go fishing. He enjoyed feeding the birds and the squirrels from his backyard feeding stations.

Hack was a member of the Avoca Fire Department for 47 years and of the Fred Funston American Legion Post 227 for 56 years.

He is survived by his wife Jean of Avoca; daughter Delores "Dee" and her husband Stan Leaders of Minden; son Jeffrey Schmidt and his wife LaVonne of Avoca; grandchildren Kristy Leaders Wendell and her husband Joshua and Tim Leaders; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Visitation with the family was to be held Wednesday evening from 7-8 p.m. at Knutson Funeral Home in Avoca.

Funeral ceremonies will be held Thursday, April 5 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca with Lay Assistant Wayne Paulsen officiating. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery in Avoca with military graveside rites performed by Fred Funston Post #227.
