In Memory: Dorothy Gardner

Dorothy Gardner, the daughter of Hubbard and Isabelle (Green) Rhoades, was born July 29, 1911, on a farm southwest of Oakland, Iowa, and died January 27, 2005, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, at the age of 93.

When Dorothy was three years old her family moved to Blackie Alberta, Canada. They lived there until the death of Dorothy's mother, when Dorothy was 12 years old. Dorothy moved back to Oakland where she lived with her aunt and uncle Ruth and Harry Vieth.

Dorothy graduated from Oakland High School in 1929 and then attended Normal Training in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She then returned to the Oakland area and taught country school near Oakland, Macedonia and Quick.

In December of 1936, she married Mark Gardner in Council Bluffs. They purchased a house in Oakland and Dorothy lived in Oakland, until the time of her death.

Dorothy was a member of the Oakland Congregational Church. Chapter E.Q. of P.E.O. where she had been a past president, and the Fort Nightly Club where she had served as president. She had been a Cub Scout Mother, and had belonged to several bridge clubs. Dorothy spent 36 summers at her vacation home on Eagle Lake in Ontario, Canada.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, her son James, her daughter-in-law Janice, her parents, her brother Harold and her sister Muriel Elaine.

She is survived by her children: Mark Gardner of Oakland, Harry Gardner of Gilletty, Wyoming and Emilie Dick and her husband Richard of Council Bluffs; her grandchildren: Doug, Kristi, Gina, Jana, Jacob, Tyler, John and Wyatt; and her great grandchildren: Sarah, Blake, Jacob, Riley, Elizabeth, Max, Kaiti, Natalie, Kye, Jason and Jackson.

Visitation was held at the Ricken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Oakland Congregational Church in Oakland with Rev. Ed Campbell officiating.

Burial was at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Oakland.

Memorials may be given to Eckles Memorial Library in Oakland or the Oakland Congregational Church.
