Donald H. Whannell

Donald H. Whannell, age 88, of Council Bluffs, passed away February 8, 2008, at Risen Son Nursing Home.

Don was born February 28, 1919, in Missouri Valley, Iowa, to the late Hugh and Agnes (Chalmers) Whannell. He served our country in the U.S. Army during WWII and was Glenn Miller's personal driver in Europe.

Don married Yvonne Reid in Harlan, Iowa on November 23, 1948, and to this union seven children were born. The Whannell family lived in Minden, Iowa, before moving to Council Bluffs in 1977. Don worked for H.K. Scholz Electrical Contractors for 25 years retiring in 2002. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie #104.

Don was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Yvonne Whannell; daughters, Patty Fernside and husband Ben, Pauline Jennings and friend, Gary Thomas, all of Council Bluffs, Mary Lee Ohlinger and husband, Richard of Portsmouth, Iowa, sons, Don Whannell and wife, Diane of Underwood, Iowa, Paul Whannell and wife Rita of Glenwood, Iowa, Tim Whannell and friend, Kris Rodenburg of Underwood, Iowa, Tom Whannell and wife, Kathy of Council Bluffs; 15 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; sister, Bette Grant of Omaha, Neb; brother, Paul Whannell of Boone, Iowa; many nieces and nephews.

Wake service, Sunday, 6:00 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8:00 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial, Monday, 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Neola, Iowa with Rev. Paul Monahan officiating.

Interment St. Patrick's Cemetery, Neola with military rites tendered by the Neola, Iowa American Legion Post #330. A lunch will follow at the parish hall.

The family will direct memorials.
