In Memory: Roy Johansen

Roy Bernard Johansen, 87, died Monday, January 31, 2005 at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan.

Roy, son of Julius and Anna (Clausen) Johansen, was born on October 21, 1917 at Portsmouth, Iowa. He was one of two children in the family. He was baptized in Portsmouth and later confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Shelby. He attended country grade school at Persia, and then graduated from Shelby High School with the Class of 1936.

Roy farmed all of his life. He was the Fairview and Shelby Township Assessor, served on the ASC Committee and was president of Babes and Boots square dance club for many years. Roy was a member of the Shelby United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Shelby and served on the Church Board. In 1987 Roy retired from farming and in 1994, he and Frances moved into their home in Shelby. Roy enjoyed traveling, camping and woodworking projects with his wife.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Dora Johansen.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; his son, Larry Johansen and his friend, Kaye Jackson, of Omaha, Nebraska; his daughter, Connie and her husband Craig Constable of Shelby; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

There was a prayer service held Wednesday at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca. Funeral services were held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Shelby with Pastor Duane Anunson officiating.

Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery.
