Nick Benzing (1942-2007)

Nick Benzing, age 65, longtime educator passed away November 22, 2007.

Nick was born in Keswick, Iowa, to Francis B. and Bessie C. Benzing on July 21, 1942. After graduating from high school, Nick graduated from University of Northern Iowa and received his masters degree from Creighton University. Nick taught a variety of subjects at Underwood Community Schools from 1965 until retiring in 2002. During his time at Underwood, Nick served as the junior class sponsor for 30 years, was active in dollars for scholars and served as vice president of the Southwest Iowa Educational foundation.

Other activities included president of Southwest Uniserve Iowa State Educational Assoc., Scout leader for troop 38 Boys Scouts of America, was first runner up for Iowa teacher of the year, Nick served as past district governor of Lions Club, current council chair of Lions of Iowa, past winner of the prestigeous Warren Coleman award, and cooked breakfest for the Neola Lions for a number of years. Nick was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Neola, Iowa State West Pottawattamie Master Gardener and served on the Iowa State Board of examiners for teachers.

Nick is preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his loving wife of 42 years, Diana (Boone) of Neola; daughter, Sarah Benzing of Washington D.C.; son, Nate and his wife, Laurie and their children, Katherine and Madison Benzing of Clear Lake, Iowa; sister, Penny Headley of What Cheer, Iowa, and her son, Patrick of Guthrie Center, Iowa.

Visitation Sunday 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Neola. Funeral services Monday 11:00 a.m. at the church, Pastor Dean Sparr, officiant. Interment Neola Cemetery with luncheon to follow back at church.

Family suggest memorials to Neola Lions Club and wishes of the family.
