Donald I. Thiel, age 70, of rural Treynor, Iowa, passed away October 8, 2007, at Mercy Hospital.

Don was born May 8, 1937, in Underwood, Iowa, to the late George and Mary (Cumminski) Thiel, he lived most of his life in the Treynor area. A 1956 graduate of Treynor High School, he was a clerk for the Illinois Central Railroad, retiring in 1994 after 25 years of service. He retired in 2004 from Bluffs Run Casino after 9 years of service. A member of the Zion Congregational Church in Treynor, he was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 58 in Glenwood. He was a Past Master of the former Masonic Lodge in Silver City and a Past Patron of the former Eastern Star in Silver City. He was also a 4H leader.

He was preceded in death by brother, Durwood Thiel; sisters, Mavis Thiel and Delores Mark.

Don is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nancy A. (Crist) Thiel; daughter, Teressa K. Brookshire and husband, Shane; Omaha, Neb.; son, Matthew J. Thiel and wife, Amie, rural Treynor; grandsons, Jayedon and Jude Thiel; granddaughter, Lucy Thiel; brothers, Duane Thiel and wife, Marvel, Crescent, Iowa, Dwight Thiel and wife, Kay, Council Bluffs; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Lauri Crist, Council Bluffs; nieces and nephews. Don had been in ill health for a number of years, but still had his sense of humor and always enjoyed visiting and watching the grandchildren's antics.

Visitation with the family will be Thursday 5 to 7 p.m at Zion Congregational Church, Treynor. Funeral services will be a 7 p.m. at the church with Rev. Alan Hardy, pastor and Rev. Rich Riche, pastor of Refuge Bible Church will co-officiate. A private family graveside service and burial will be Friday, 10 a.m., Zion Congregational Cemetery.

Memorials may be offered to either Zion Congregational Church, Treynor Rescue or the Leukemia Association.
