Donald Joseph McElroy, age 86, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, passed away August 15, 2007, at a local care center.

Donald was born May 3, 1921, in Albia, Iowa to the late Donald and Mary (Martin) McElroy. He graduated from St. Ambrose Academy in Davenport, Iowa in 1940 and served our country in the U.S. Navy, in WWII, from 1942 to 1945. This included duty as a gunners mate on the USS Guam in the Pacific Theater. He retired from Bluffs Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa in 1990 and moved to Council Bluffs to be closer to his beloved family. He became a greeter at Wal-Mart, a job he truly enjoyed until his death.

Donald was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Edna; his son and daughter-in-law, Donald James McElroy and Eileen; and his sister, Lorraine Martin.

He is survived by his daughter, RoseMarie Lachney; grandsons, Lance Lachney, Wade Lachney, Curtis McElroy and Kevin McElroy; nieces and nephews; friends and co-workers.

Cremation there will be no viewing or special visitation with the family. Memorials may be offered to Children's Miracle Network or charity of choice.
