Edward J. Van Horn, 80, of Urbandale died peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Ed was born in Wichita, KS on August 23, 1931 to Edward and Dorothy (Shreves) Van Horn. He graduated from St. Ambrose College in Davenport and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He worked for Northwestern Bell (later AT&T) for 35 years retiring in 1989.
Ed had lived in Urbandale for 47 years. He was a member of the Urbandale Lions Club and past district governor for Lions of Iowa. He was also a member of the Urbandale VFW, American Legion and Telephone Pioneers of America.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Delores Van Horn of Urbandale; three children, Kenneth (Jane) Van Horn of Norwalk, LaDonna (Bruce) Elrod of Prairie City and LeAnn (Robert) Holtzbauer of rural Cumming; three grandchildren, Heather (Andy) Werning, Nate Van Horn and Doug (Jen) Elrod; three great grandchildren; and five siblings, Garry (Tieng) Van Horn, Ethel Mae Hardesty, Pat Pankey, Carol (Fred) Wiessing and Judi (Frank) Dineen. He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Kenny Elrod.
Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, August 5 at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, August 6 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church of which he was a long-time member. Private burial will be at McDivitt Grove Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Aldersgate United Methodist Church Endowment Fund or the Iowa Lions.
