Langwith, Madaline G. - 1915-2012

Madaline G. Langwith, 96, passed away on March 15, 2012 at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, March 23, 2012 at Iles Funeral Homes, Westover Chapel. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at 2 p.m., Friday at Jefferson City Cemetery in Jefferson.
Madaline was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1915 on a farm in Jefferson, Iowa to Arthur and Ethel Grimes. She graduated from Jefferson High School and moved to Des Moines to attend Dickinson Secretarial School. In Des Moines, Madaline worked for GMAC and while setting up a new office in Davenport, Iowa she met Edward L. Langwith. They were married January 16, 1942. When Edward was drafted later that year, Madaline returned to Des Moines and began working for the U.S. Treasury, retiring in 1979 with 36 years of service. Not one to sit around, she opened her own shop, Madaline's Gifts and Antiques, which she ran for 21 years until a heart attack forced her to close it in 2000.
Madaline was a long time member of First Christian Church in Des Moines and was active in the Pilot Club of Des Moines. She loved to bowl and traveled all over the United States to bowling tournaments. In later years she enjoyed playing BINGO and she loved to win!
Madaline was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; her parents and her brother, John Grimes. She is survived by, sisters-in-law, Mary Grimes of California and Rovene Langwith of Johnston; niece, Sharon McCain of California; nephews, John Langwith of Milan, Illinois, Dr. Dennis Langwith, of Des Moines, Gary Langwith of Ankeny and Warren Langwith of Johnston and her cousin, Sarah Gittins of Perry, Iowa. Madaline had many friends and always ended a visit by saying "Until We Meet Again."
Memorial contributions may be directed to First Christian Church in Des Moines or the American Heart Association.
