Joe passed away on March 5, 2011, surrounded by his family, after a sudden downturn in health. He was born on April 14, 1921, in Gilman, Minnesota to John and Adelaide (Wensman) Herman. Joe served his country in both World War II and the Korean War. Joe had a Masters in common sense and led with a strong handshake. He was welcoming and friendly to all.

A celebration of Joe's life will be held on April 8, 2011, the planned date for his 90th birthday party. Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waukee, where the family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Inurnment of the cremated remains will follow at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery near Van Meter.

Those left to cherish Joe's memory include his loving wife of 61 years, Rosemary; daughters Kathy (John) Pons, Patricia Herman, Susan Gilman, and Maria Herman; sons Jim (Peg) Herman, Thomas (Susan) Herman, David (Renee) Herman, Bill (Frances) Herman, and Joe (Leslie) Herman; 17 grandchildren; four and a half great-grandchildren; and six of his siblings. Preceded him in death were his parents, one sister and one brother.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Boniface Catholic Church or the Van Meter American Legion, Post #403. ~ The Des Moines (IA) Register 03 April 2011.
