West Des MoinesSuzanne Mattern Stock, 66, passed away surrounded by love on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Kavanagh House. She fought a short battle with lung cancer.
Sue was born in Des Moines on June 26, 1945 to Dr. John Q.A. Mattern and Helen Mae Foust Mattern. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1963. In 1965, she earned an A.A. degree from Grand View College. She graduated from The University of Iowa in 1965 with a B.A. degree in elementary education. She taught kindergarten in the Des Moines School District and preschool at the Science Center of Iowa. From 1990 through 2008, Sue was a kindergarten teacher at Crossroads Park Elementary School in the West Des Moines School District. Sue possessed a strong passion for the education, care, and concern of young children.
Sue was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Des Moines and a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. She supported the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, Gigi's Playhouse, National Down Syndrome Society, and Special Olympics.
Sue married Joseph R. Stock in 1967 and together they had two children; Lisa Suzanne Stock Prey of Waukee and Joseph John Stock of West Des Moines. Her Heaven on earth was her four grandsons: Jake, Zach, Sam and Luie. These boys filled her life with great love and joy! Sue is survived by her husband, her children, and these four adored grandsons.
Also surviving are her brother, Dr. John Q.A. Mattern, II and his wife, Jan, of Newport News, Virginia and her sister, Nora Mattern Martin and her husband, Mike, of Centennial, Colorado. Many loving family members, dear friends and former students are also left to mourn her.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions may be made to Gigi's Playhouse in support of their literacy program. Sue's visitation is scheduled for Sunday, February 5, 2012 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton's Funeral Home on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Her funeral is scheduled for Monday, February 6, 2012 at 10 a.m. also at Hamilton's. A reception will follow her funeral. Friends may choose to join the family at her burial site within the Des Moines Masonic Cemetery following her reception.
The family expresses their deep gratitude for the overwhelming support received during her illness and following her passing.
