Lois Fern Johnson
1910 - 2011
Des Moines

Lois Fern Johnson, aged 100, passed away April 1, 2011, at Fountain West Health Center, West Des Moines.

Fern was born November 26, 1910, in Zearing, IA, the daughter of Lloyd and Esther (Erickson) Scoville. As a child, she lived in Zearing, McCallsburg and Colo, graduating from Colo High School in 1928. She was united in marriage to Gerald E. Johnson at Nevada, IA, June 23, 1929; they had one daughter, Lois Neidra, born September 15, 1930.

After a divorce in 1933, Fern moved to Des Moines, where she made her home for the rest of life, always a strong supporter of the city. She worked as a waitress at the old Boyce's Cafe in downtown Des Moines, then was employed as cashier at Dahl's located at Beaver and Franklin for 30 years, until her retirement in 1980. Her love of people made her a natural at this job; old customers would approach her when she was no longer working, just to say hello.

Fern was a member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ at 25th & University, and a charter member of Shepherd's Center. Friends and family will remember Fern as an avid follower of sports, a prodigious knitter and sewer. She loved to read, travel, walk, do volunteer work and be with family and friends. She often played Bingo and attended classes at Plymouth Place, her home for the last 25 years, which she dearly loved.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister. She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter, Neidra Johnson Krebs and son-in-law Howard of Northfield, MN.; four grandchildren: Alecia Stevens (Lee) of Minneapolis, MN.; Robin Krebs (Colleen) of Burnsville, MN.; Holly Moore of Barrington, IL.; and Kelly Krebs (partner Tom Clemens) of Minneapolis, MN. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren: Alexander and Isabelle Donovan; Nick, Molly, Aaron and Sam Krebs, and Evan Moore; and a niece Janice Kirkdorffer of Twin Falls, ID., and nephew Ron (Phyllis) Gould of Shady Cove, OR, as well as a host of friends and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Des Moines, on Saturday, April 16, with burial following in the Zearing cemetery. Visitation will take place Friday, April 15, at Dunn's Funeral Home, 2121 Grand Ave., Des Moines, between the hours of 3 and 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Bethel Mission or Door of Faith in Des Moines, or charity of choice.
