NOVEMBER 21, 1932 – MARCH 31, 2011

Donald “Don” L. Heuer, 78, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Mercy West Lakes Hospital. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at Lutheran Church of Hope with interment at 12:30 p.m. in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, IA.

Don was born November 21, 1932 in Muscatine, IA, the son of Harry and Peggy (Cromer) Heuer. He was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps serving during the Korean War. Don had lived in West Des Moines since 1973 and he retired in 1991 from the U.S. Postal Service where he was Director of Mail Processing. He was a member of the Iowa State University Cyclone Cardinal Club, followed the Valley Tigers and Cleveland Browns, enjoyed horse racing and loved spending time with his family.

Don is survived by his daughter, Lisa Heuer of West Des Moines; two sons, Don Heuer II of West Des Moines and Darin (Joy) Heuer of Anaheim Hills, CA.; grandchild, Nick Heuer of West Des Moines; step-children, Daryl (Marci) Bailey of Bondurant, IA and Matt (Johnnie) Bender of Urbandale; step-grandchildren, Brock, Cole, Payton and Gloria Bailey of Bondurant and Liera and Jack Bender of Urbandale; sister, Bettie (Carl) Strickland of Columbus, MS; brother, Darwin Heuer of South Dakota; mother of his children, Joanne Reed of Lebanon, MO; mother of his step-children, Connie Heuer of Altoona; nine nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Mocha. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frances and Marlin Heuer; nephews, Donnie and Dennis Strickland; and a niece, Vicki Lyn Strickland.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2011 at McLaren’s Chapel in West Des Moines.
