Merritt John (Jack) Weston
1931 - 2012
Des Moines, Iowa

Jack passed away peacefully on January 25, 2012 at Methodist Medical Center, while holding his son's hand.

Jack was born in Chicago, Illinois to Merritt Weston and Viola (Bloomquist) Weston on September 21, 1931. The family moved to Boone,Iowa where he grew up. He married Mary Dixon and had their three children, Vicki, Carla, and Jon. Jack spent most of his career working as a project manager for the Weitz Company, which took him all over the country. He was one of the lucky ones, for he truly loved what he did. Saying that each building, shopping center, etc. was like raising a child and always hard to leave.

Anyone who knew Jack realized from the get go that life was for living……and living he did! Always a 'student of life' jumping in with both feet. While building a complex in Saudi Arabia he was given a gift, a camel which he named Rock. Everyone should own a camel at least once in their lifetime.

He loved baseball and taught his son how to pitch while learning the fundamentals himself along the way. He went on to coach countless young men how to play the game with respect and, more importantly, how to lose with dignity. "Baseball is a game of inches, boys"

He adored his children and grandchildren and was a constant in their lives from wherever he lived. Together they experienced many adventures and wove memories that will last each of them a lifetime.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Vicki (Charles) Colby III, and Jon Merritt (Michele) Weston, his grandchildren, Sam (Amanda) Acheson III, Summer (Mike) Allen, Chas Colby, Lisi (Chad) Harkins, Alexander Merritt Colby, Maxwell Colby, Courtney (Yancy) Everhart, and Jay (Emily) Bachman. His great grandchildren, Liam, Quincy, Cameron, Charli , Burkli, Addie, Yancy, Ethan, Michael, and Carla. Grand dogs Bailey and Murphy. His sister Patricia Miller and brother Gary Weston, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his precious daughter, Carla, his mother Viola and father Merritt.

Jack's family would like to thank the staff and residents of Fountain West Health Center for their constant care and lasting friendships. And a heartfelt thank you to Methodist Hospital and his compassionate Iowa Health's Hospice Palliative Care team.

There will be a private family service. A celebration of Jack's life will be held at a later date.

Dad, you will remain in our hearts forever and a day.
