Joyce was born April 25, 1930, near Montgomery, Iowa, the youngest of eight children to John Freemont and Gladys Marie (Davis) Hilliard. She was baptized in the Montgomery Methodist Church at a young age and later joined Immanuel United Methodist Church in Des Moines.
Joyce graduated from Spirit Lake Consolidated School in 1947 and attended Buena Vista College. Here she met Hugh Clair Farquharson of Peterson, Iowa. They were married June 3, 1951, and made their home in Des Moines. To this union were born Lee Clair and Debra Jean.

Throughout her life, Joyce had been very active in her children's activities, her church, Scottish Heritage Society, Des Moines Audubon Society, Iowa Genealogy Society and Living History Farms. She enjoyed keeping up with and supporting her grandsons endeavors. The Farquharsons were travelers, campers and gardeners. Joyce had an avid interest in her family roots, Iowa history, and birds. She volunteered many years at Living History Farms with her late husband, Hugh. After his death in 1986 she built a machine shed to his memory on the 1920 farm.
