Hazel Hewitt Thomas, 97, a resident of Altoona Manor, died Monday, December 22, 2003 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 27 at Galilee Baptist Church, with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines.

Hazel was born in New Virginia, Iowa, graduated from Indianola High School and moved to Des Moines in 1941. She retired from LOOK Magazine in 1969 after 15 years of clerical service. Hazel attended Galilee Baptist Church, where she was a choir member and Sunday School Superintendent. She also attended Sunday School conventions into her 80's. She was a member of the original Senior Singers of Des Moines, Indianola OMS Group and Des Moines School System PTA. Hazel will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother.

She is survived by her sons, Charles (Jane) Thomas and Darwin (Lois) Thomas; daughter-in-law, Marie Thomas, all of Des Moines; eleven grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Hulda Hewitt; husband, Arthur; and son, Donald.

Family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Grandview Park Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Galilee Baptist Church Education Fund. ~ The Iles Funeral Homes, Des Moines, Iowa 22 Dec 2003.
