Lloyd James Cafferty, 87, of 623 17th Ave NW, Altoona, IA, died December 1, 2003 at Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, December 4 at Adams Funeral Home in Ames, IA. Burial will be at Story Memorial Gardens in Ames.

Lloyd was born to Ira and Louise Cafferty in Rinard, Iowa on December 21, 1915. He attended school at Rinard and then went on to Iowa State College where he pursued a degree in Forestry. He served in the Army during WW II and was wounded in the European Theatre.

He was united in marriage to Katie Campbell and during their marriage of 21 years, five children were born. Lloyd opened his own nursery south of Ames where he worked until he retired.

Lloyd married Jennie Clark Good in 1973 at the Little Brown Church. They shared a love of travel and spent many years touring the world. He was also very involved with the Iowa Arboretum from its beginnings and worked diligently in it until his death. He also served as director for three years. He was a member of the Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association and charter member of the Ames Evening Lions Club.

Lloyd loved music and dancing. He enjoyed collecting and was a member of the Bell Collector's Association.

He is survived by his wife, Jennie; his sister, Elsie Layland of Arizona; his sons, Glen (Maija) of Washington state, Dennis (Susan) of North Carolina and Phil (Sue) of Ames; his daughter, Peggy (Ted) Peterson; and three stepchildren, Virginia (John) whitaker, Dale Clark and Jerry (Mary Lou) Clark. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and a daughter, Jean.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Adams Funeral Home. The family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m.
