Des MoinesDouglas L. Grannes, 73, passed away April 23, 2011, at Kavanagh Hospice House of Des Moines, Iowa of lung cancer. He was born on May 17, 1937, to Walter and Flora Grannes in Minneapolis, MN. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, Minneapolis, and Mankato State College. He also earned his M. Ed. Degree from University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He taught in Hendricks, Circle Pines, Mahnomen, and Willow River, all in Minnesota.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jan, his sons Dean (Stephanie) and Dana (Debera), grandchildren, Macy, Sebastian, Spencer, Nathaniel, Nicholas and step grandson, Tyler. Other survivors are his brothers Len of Eden Prairie, Al (Marilyn) of Excelsior, sister in law Dottie, nieces and nephews all of Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Walter (Margit), and Robert, niece Holly, and nephew Walter III, David and Lenny, and Doug's favorite dogs, Shadow and Cady.
Doug and Jan were longtime residents of Carlton, MN, where they owned and operated a retail hardware store. Doug was active in the community, Boy Scouts, AFS parent, Chamber of Commerce, NEA and MEA.
Memorial services will be at Windsor Heights Lutheran Church, May 7, 2011 at 1 p.m., with his ashes to be interred at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
