Catherine Ann Mick was born in Bussey, Iowa on December 27, 1919, and passed away at Edgewater, West Des Moines, on Tuesday, May 3, 2011. She was the daughter of Frank and Alice (Spaur) Mick and grew up in the Knoxville area. She graduated from high school there in 1938 and from the CCCC Business College in Des Moines in 1939. Catherine was immediately hired by the Iowa Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company where she worked for 30 years. She served as executive secretary for the P.E.O. Sisterhood for four years, then returned to the insurance profession at Employers Mutual Companies to complete her working career, retiring in 1987.

Memberships included the Des Moines Business and Professional Women's Club, Altrusa International, and Chapters IZ and EH of P.E.O., and she served as president of each organization. She was elected to the state board of Iowa P.E.O. and served as its president as well as the president of the Sarah Porter Beckwith Home and the Iowa P.E.O. Project Fund. Catherine also was a member of the Friendship Force of Greater Des Moines and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines.

Catherine loved to travel and with her friend, Jean Stewart, enjoyed many cruises and visited Europe several times, as well as Russia, Mexico, China, Australia and New Zealand. She was an avid reader and enjoyed making needlepoint Christmas stockings.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents and beloved auntie, Nellie Wright. There are no immediate survivors but Catherine was truly indebted to Jean Stewart and her extended family for years of friendship and family life.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 6, 2011 at Hoyt Sherman Place, 1501 Woodland Ave., Des Moines.
