Bondurant

Sarah Mary (Tuffin) Rettig, 74, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2013 at Mercy Hospital. The family will greet friends from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, February 3, 2013 at Ankeny Funeral Home. A celebration of Sarah's life will be 11 a.m., Monday at Ankeny First United Methodist Church with Pastor Martha Ward officiating. Burial will be at the Bondurant Cemetery.

Sarah was born to John Edward and Dorothea (Shepherd) Tuffin on May 13, 1938. She graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1956. She was united in marriage to Vernon Rettig on April 18, 1959. In 1962 they moved into a rundown old house on 40 acres north of Bondurant. Together they built a new brick house and expanded their farming operation. In 1970 they started raising Christmas trees.

Sarah was a hard worker, helping her part time farmer husband with many farming tasks. She was also active in the First United Methodist Church in Ankeny and supervised the kitchen operation of their Harvest Home Dinner. More than anything, Sarah loved being with her family and they held a special place in her heart.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Vernon Rettig; four children, Rex Rettig of Bondurant, Neva (Tom) Baker of Muscatine, IA, Mark (Susan) Rettig of East Peoria, IL, Ellen (Nobuyuki) Miki of Kobe, Japan; five grandchildren; four sisters, Margaret Aldrich of Wilksboro, N.C., Joanne Brown of Indianola, IA, Marilyne (Bruce) Butler of Otis Orchards, WA, Ruth (Ralph) O'Donnell of Council Bluffs, IA; and five brothers, Wendell of Newton, IA, Kenneth (Elizabeth) of Janesville, CA, Charles (Jolene) of Casey, IA, Robert (Pat) Tuffin of Kansas City, MO, and Tom (Jan) of Casey, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The family would like to thank doctors; Shannon Hood, Siva Jagarlapudi, Loren Brown, Roy Molina, and the staff on the 8th floor of Mercy Hospital.

Memorial contributions can be made to The American Cancer Society-Mid West Division or Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
