Mike Versackas, 89, died Monday, April 4, 2011 at Hospice Kavanagh House in Des Moines, from complications of a fall. The body has been cremated and a Memorial Mass will be held 1:30pm Saturday, April 9, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Mike was born in Haverhill, MA, on February 3, 1922, weighing in at three pounds, to Mike and Victoria (Pecukonis) Versackas, Lithuanian immigrants. He served in the US Navy in the South Pacific during WWII and graduated from Marquette University where he met his future bride. Mike married Mary Elizabeth Burke on August 15, 1946, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He worked for Northwestern Bell for 30 years, retiring in 1977. Mike enjoyed his grandchildren, his dogs and studying the Wall Street Journal. For many years he had a garden and took great pleasure in giving away his phenomenal tomatoes.

Mike is survived by his wife Mary, his children, Dr. Michael (Diane)Versackas and Lynn (Richard) Miller, both of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Amy (Mark) Main of Waukee, Peter (Katie) Xain of Columbia, MO, Alex (Sarah Danilson) Versackas of Des Moines, Gant (Melissa) Miller of Waukee, Dr. Christopher (Paige) Miller of Urbandale and Megan (Josh) Smith of Waukee; and his great-grandchildren, Isabella and Elise Main, Chloe, Macy and Sydney Miller, Shaylee Miller and Colton Smith.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
