E. Dwane Richards passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at the Veterans Hospital from complications of diabetes. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 11, 2011 at Grace Lutheran Church with burial following at Resthaven Cemetery.

Dwane was born November 24, 1921 in Humeston, Iowa the son of Cyrus and Merle "Smith" Richards. He graduated from East High School in 1939 and was a member of the East High Alumni Association. Dwane served in the Army and was a veteran of WWII (1942-45) serving in the 7th Army Medical Corps. He was united in marriage to Helen L. Oberg on December 29, 1945. Dwane was founder and owner of Richard's Pharmacy. He was a very caring pharmacist and held the position of Honorary President of the Iowa Pharmacist Assoc. of which he was a member. He was also a member of the Central Iowa Pharmacists. Dwane was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for 58 years. He was a member of the Merle Hay Kiwanis, where he held the position of President. Dwane was a member of Pioneer Masonic Lodge and Drake University 50 Year Club. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him - family, friends and customers alike.

Dwane is lovingly survived by his wife, Helen L. (Oberg) Richards; children, Dr. Stephen (Janice) Richards of Spirit Lake and Mark (Janet) Richards of Urbandale; grandchildren, Christopher (Melissa) Richards of Spirit Lake, Jennifer (Andrew) Lyons of Ellensburg, WA, Alison (Travis) Watson of Snohomish, WA and Megan (Ian) Boers of Urbandale; great grand children, Shelby Boers, Rhapsody Richards, Issac Lyons and Kyle Watson.

He is preceded in death by his parents; step mother, Florance "Scott" Richards; two brothers; a sister and his son, Dr. Thomas Richards.

A visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, April 10th at Grace Lutheran Church. With a prayer service being held at 5:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church, Juvenile Diabetes Association or donor's choice. ~ The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa Sat 9 April 2011.
