Delmar (Del) Borer, 85, passed away on May 17, 2011 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

Del was born in Burnside, Iowa to William and Muriel Borer, and lived in the Des Moines area much of his adult life. He enjoyed a varied career which took him to live in Texas, New Jersey and New York and ultimately back to Iowa. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, and was awarded a Purple Heart and other commendations. He was a member of the DAV, lifetime member of the National Press Photographers Association, member of the Iowa Press Photographers Association, and a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church of Urbandale.

He spent his career as a photojournalist, during which time he won numerous recognitions and awards. He worked for many years for the Register and Tribune, was Director of Photography for World Book Science in Houston, covering the NASA Program, the astronauts, and other science projects. Del retired from the Eastman Kodak Company as Coordinator of Photojournalism Markets, moving back to Iowa in 1993.

Growing up in rural Iowa gave Del a lifelong passion for gardening. He loved growing vegetables, fruits and flowers, and sharing them with friends and neighbors. He was an accomplished amateur golfer, avid sports fan and loved to read, particularly non-fiction.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 60 years, Marilyn (Davis) Borer of Urbandale; children, Nancy (Jon) Numair of Arvada, CO; William Borer of Rochester, NY; grandchildren, Shannon, Megan and Patrick; and great-grandchildren, Jade, Owen and Deiva; sisters, Helen Evans of Ft. Dodge, IA and Dorothy Grossnickle of Lehigh, IA; sister-in-law, Margit Murphy of Urbandale and numerous nieces and nephews throughout the country.

He is pre-deceased by his parents; brothers, Wayne and Ted and sister, Beverly Swinderman.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at McLaren's Chapel in West Des Moines. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 3510 72nd Street, in Urbandale.

Memorials may be made to St. Stephen Lutheran Church or Hospice of Central Iowa.
