Bill Engel, 80, died Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at home. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 20, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Urbandale, with burial to follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Bill was born in Kenosha, WI to William C. and Catherine (Smilges) Engel on June 19, 1930. He graduated from Mary D. Bradford High School and received his BBA and MBA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Bill started his career at the Continental Illinois Bank in Chicago in 1953. He was an investment counselor in Detroit, MI and moved to Lexington, KY where he entered the insurance industry. Bill moved to Des Moines in 1967 where he was the senior investments officer for American Mutual Life Insurance. He retired in 1994 as President and COO.

Bill married Lois Ott on June 21, 1952, in Marshfield, WI. They were blessed with four children, Bill, Bradley, Jason and Nancy. He was active in his church at both the local and national level. Bill, an avid golfer, was the Wisconsin State Junior Champion at 17, and played four years of varsity golf at U of W. He was also a member and past president of Des Moines Golf and Country Club. His family was his greatest pride and joy and his greatest source of fulfillment. Bill enjoyed annual vacations at Brainerd, MN with his family fishing and of course, playing more golf.

Bill is survived by his wife, Lois, children, Bill (Sherrie) of Indianola, Jason (Tracy) of San Juan Capistrano, CA, Nancy (Don) Budensiek of Bentonville, AR, and daughter-in-law, Cyd Engel of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Jason Engel, Christina (Jon) Fitzpatrick, Katherine (Sean) Stoner, Sarah Grace Engel, Hailey Budensiek and Matt Saitta; great-grandchildren, Emily and Owen; and his brother, Charles (Doris) Engel of Ocala, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his son Bradley.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church or John Stoddard Cancer Center.
