1929 - 2011 Obituary Condolences

Rolando completed his brief but valiant fight against cancer on Monday, May 16, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA.

Dad was born on August 6, 1929 in Santiago, Cuba to Antonia and Ignacio Montalvo. In 1956, he married Norma Jimenez in Santi Spiritus, Cuba and had two daughters, Christina and Elena. In September 1962, the family immigrated to the United States and settled in Des Moines, IA.

Dad loved his family and enjoyed spending every minute he could with his granddaughters and great-grandchildren. Dad was an avid painter who mastered his technique throughout the years. He also had a love for soccer and enjoyed watching "spooky" movies on the SyFy Channel.

He is survived by his daughters, Christina Montalvo of Windsor Heights, and Elena Baas of Urbandale; son-in-law, Steve Baas of West Des Moines; granddaughters, Stephanie Baas (Kyle Campbell) of Des Moines, Melissa Baas of West Des Moines, Myra Cabrera of Urbandale; great-granddaughters, Kamryn and Sophia Hilsabeck; sister-in-laws, Nancy Legislador (Rudy) of Clive, Nori Dodson (James) of Madrid, Spain; grand nephews, Robert Legislador (Stephanie) of Cedar Rapids, Richard Legislador of Phoenix, AZ, Mark Dodson of Madrid, Spain; great-grandniece, Lila and great-grandnephews, Joseph and Harrison Legislador.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2011 followed by a Funeral Mass at Caldwell-Raddatz Funeral Home at 8201 Hickman Road, Urbandale, IA.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Bishop Drumm Home and Mercy Hospice in Johnston for the excellent care and compassion they showed our dad. We would also like to thank all his friends and neighbors at The Rose Assisted Living. You are all angels on earth.
