Grace Alice (Russell) Sickels (2012)

Grace died September 18, 2012 at Parkridge Nursing and Rehab Center, Pleasant Hill, Iowa at the age of 90 years, from complications related to Alzheimer's Disease.

Grace was born May 31, 1922 in Batavia, Iowa to Adelbert "Gene" and Pauline (Mosey) Russell. She also lived in Tama, Earlham, Ankeny and Des Moines before becoming a beloved resident of Parkridge in 2005.

Grace enjoyed spending time with her family, reading and hand-sewing Barbie Doll clothes and pot holders. Grace owned her own restaurant in Earlham, and then worked several places as a waitress, or with banquet and catering. She was also employed at Meredith Publishing for over 16 years. In 1987, retired from Keck Inc and then enjoyed her days traveling with her friend, Wilbur.

Grace is survived by her children, Walter Swenson, David Sickels and Darcy (Ken) Culver all of Des Moines. Also left to cherish her memories are her grandchildren, Carla (Jim) Mahaffey, Tim Swenson, Jeni Ash, Robert "Bobby" (Mona) Gullion, Dawn Scott (Rob Johnson), DeAnna (Cole) Davis, Ken (Darcy) Culver, Ron (Sheryl) Culver and Rebecca Culver. Her great-grandchildren, Jolynn (Steve) Riedesel, Michael (Kelsey) Johnston, Ryan (Shelby) Johnston, David C. Sickels, Michael and Tyler Ash, Alayna Thomas, Antonio "Tony" Ramirez, Alyiss Keller, Brittany, Rylin and Robert II Gullion, Joshua Davis, T.J. and Mark Michelsen, Kacie, Ethan (Kelly) Culver and Nick Stifel and her great-great grandchildren, Makenna and Madison Johnston, Kale Riedesel, Emily and Gavin Culver.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Maurice, Mike and Raleigh; daughter, Elizabeth "Betty" and son-in-law, Gene Culver; grandson, Donald "Donnie" Stifel; daughter-in-law, Patricia "Pat" Collins and her friend and travel partner, Wilbur Holcomb.

Visitation with the family will be held Thursday, September 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Merle Hay Funeral Home, Des Moines. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Friday, September 21 at the funeral home. ~ The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa 20 Sept 2012.
