James S. Hanna died Sunday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James F. Page, 605 Ovid avenue, Highland Park. The funeral will be from the Page residence Monday afternoon at 2:30, with burial at Glendale cemetery.
The deceased was 80 years old, a pioneer citizen of Iowa, and father of former Mayor James R. Hanna. He was born at Ashland, Ohio, in 1838, and moved to Illinois at an early age, following the Black Hawk wars. In 1858 he organized a gold seeking party and went to Colorado with the Pikes peak gold rush. On his return from Colorado he paid his first visit to Des Moines.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted at Geneseo, IL, in Company H, Fifty-seventh Illinois volunteer infantry. He was at the capture of Fort McHenry, and was shot at the battle of Pittsburgh Landing. The wound received was serious, hampering him all his life, although he saw some service after his recovery.
At the close of the war he returned to Illinois and engaged in the mercantile business until 1870, when because of indoor confinement his health failed, and he came to western Iowa, where he settled near Atlantic. He entered into the pioneer activity of these times, and was prominent in the public life of his community.
With the exception of three years spent in western Nebraska, he has spent all the time since 1870 in Iowa. The last seven years he has lived in Des Moines with his son, James R. Hanna.
He is survived by five children, James R. of Des Moines, F. R. Hanna of Ankeny, Ia.; George W. Hanna of Valley City, ND; Mrs. George Davis of Landry, SD; and Mrs. James F. Page of Des Moines.
