Bernice M. Ackelson, 84, died Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Regency Care Center in Norwalk. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 from 12 (noon) to 2 p.m., at Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Chapel. A service will follow at Glendale Cemetery.

Bernice was born on June 20, 1926, in Tipple, West Virginia, the daughter of Wilbert and Ollie Browning Bailey. She met Edgar Ackelson while he was visiting relatives in West Virginia and they were united in marriage on April 5, 1946, at Fort Des Moines. Bernice lived in Des Moines most of her life, and spent many years babysitting at home. She enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing, latch hook and embroidery.

Bernice is survived by her three children, Dean (Marilee) Ackelson of Des Moines, Larry (Edith) Ackelson of Seligman, MO, and Linda Ackelson (Dave Rowen) of Norwalk; seven grandchildren, W. Michael (Kristi) Ackelson, Erik (Crystal) Ackelson, Chris Ackelson, Anne (Rob) Downs, Frank Rowen, Nancy (Donald) Bennett and Neil (Judy) Faux; 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edgar; six brothers and two sisters.
