Wood, age 37, of West Des Moines, Iowa died of cancer at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa on June 27, 1988. Services were held June 29 at the Windsor United Methodist Church with interment in Marshall County Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Benton, Kentucky.
An Ohio native, Wood had lived in Des Moines for six years. At the time of his death, Wood was serving as chaplain at Mercy Hospital Medical Center and as director of Christian Education at Windsor United Methodist Church in Des Moines, Iowa. Born in Dayton, Ohio, he had also lived in western Kentucky before attending Lambuth College in Jackson, Tennessee. Following his graduation from Methodist Theological School of Ohio in 1976, Wood returned to Tennessee to serve pastorates at Christ United Methodist Church in Memphis and the Mason-Braden charge.
Wood came to Iowa in 1980, serving as pastor of the Macksburg-Hebron-Wesley Chapel charge for two years. Following clinical pastoral training in Des Moines, he became chaplain at the Woodward State Hospital in 1983. He was named chaplain at Mercy in 1985.
Survivors include a son, Geoffrey Wood of Des Moines, Iowa; his mother Betty Gilbert of Gilbertville, Kentucky; a sister, Barbara Egner of Gilbertville, Kentucky and a brother Randolph Guennel of Upper Jay, New York.
