Death of Mrs. Judge W. E. Miller

Mrs. Mary R. Miller, wife of ex-chief justice, Judge W. E. Miller, and mother of the editor of this paper, died in Chicago Wednesday afternoon at the age of 80 years. Since the death of her husband, which occurred twelve years ago, she has made her home with her daughters in Chicago. The remains will reach Des Moines tomorrow morning accompanied by two daughters and two sons and the funeral will be held at the home of the deceased’s granddaughter, Mrs. J. A. Eddy, at noon, and the remains will be interred in Greenwood cemetery beside her companion of over 50 years.

The deceased leaves to mourn her four daughters and four sons as follows: Mrs. W. R. Kerr, Chicago, Mrs. L. N. Eldridge, Chicago, J. W. Miller, Winterset, W. E. Miller, Jr., Chicago, Mrs. C. C. Fuller, Seattle, Wash., A. L. Miller, Chicago, Dr. H. D. Miller, Seattle and Mrs. H. R. Hirschleg, Lincoln, Neb. Save the two in Seattle all will be present at the funeral.

The types cannot express the true feelings and emotions of one who loses a mother. Only those who have gone through the experience can realize what it means to the children left behind. The boy’s memory is flooded with recollections wherein the mother is the central figure; the loving ministrations innumerable; the thoughtful care and watchfulness which passed unnoticed at the time, fills the vision of after life with amazement at the unselfish devotion and tireless, kindly actions which none but a mother can give or perform.

We see death all around us; we come in contact with it daily and almost hourly it confronts us, but we know not what it means until it touches us. It is said that one’s best friend in all the world is his mother. This is a blessing vouchsafed to everyone, and when death stalks in, anything that can be said or anything that can be written totally fails to compensate or alleviate.
