Obituary-Granville Marion Wheeler

Granville Marion Wheeler, son of John Tipton and Ann Wheeler was born near Terre Haute, Indiana, on March 31, 1849, and died at Ankeny, February 5, 1932, aged 82 years 10 months and 5 days.

When two years old with his parents he came to Iowa first settling at Swede Point, afterward Madrid. The journey was made by ox team and after five years with the same mode of conveyance the family returned briefly to Indiana, returning again to Iowa, to Saylorville where he grew to manhood. Then Aprinl 13, 1870 he married Lucy Ann Andrews and after three years in Kansas their home was established in Polk county for twenty-five years two miles south of Ankeny, later northeast of town and in Ankeny itself. Mrs. Wheeler died January 4, 1924, and since that time Mr. Wheeler has made his home with his children of whom three survive him. They are Samuel T. And Frederick Marion of Ankeny and Mrs. Wallace Meyer of Des Moines. One daughter Nettie died at the age of six. He is survived also by fifeteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren and by one sister, Mrs. Mary Backus of San Francisco, California, and tow brothers, Geo. W. of Saylorville and Samuel H. Of Elkhart.

Nearly a half century ago under the pastorate of Rev. A.B. Shipman in a revival held in the old brick school house at Oralabor Mr. Wheeler was soundly converted and has continued as a faithful and ardent Christian all the years since. He gave many years of service as a trustee of the church and in the days of his activity was noted for his interest in the church and his generisity His works will follow him.

The funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Ankeny Methodist church by Rev. J.E. Habliston, the pastor, assisted by Rev. P. E. Shult, pastor of the Congregational church. The young men’s quartette consisting of Carrol Essick, Emerald Kennedy, Chester Crum and Vernon Smith, Mrs. Essick, pianist, rendered several beautiful selections. Burial was made at Oralabor cemetery.

His children and their families desire to thank the neighbors and friends for sympathy and help extended during the illness, death and burial of Mr Wheeler.
