Walter Carl Williams, Sr. of Des Moines, Iowa departed this life, Wednesday September 2, 2009. Walter was born on October 30, 1940, to Bamie Thompson and Felix A. Williams, Sr. in Des Moines, Iowa. He was educated in the Des Moines Public School system where he graduated from East High School. He served in the military as a radar operator and after a year long civil rights battle was one of the first black men to be hired on the Des Moines Fire Department in 1967. Walt went on to become a contractor, building and remodeling homes an inherited talent given to him from his father.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving children: Lennie, Monica, Mia, Natasha, Walter Jr., and Robert; his brothers and sisters; loving and devoted confidant; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other loving relatives and friends far and near.
Services are Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Elim Christian Church. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
