WILLIAM WELLS SR. (BILL)

William Wells Sr. ("Bill") was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 29, 2008. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2008, at The Cathedral Church of St. Paul.

Born March 27, 1921 in Topeka, Kansas, William was the son of the late Arthur and Willia May Wells. William was a resident of Des Moines for over eighty years, met and married Venita Carmen Quincy on April 23, 1943.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, William leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of sixty-five years Venita Wells, three sons and daughters-in-law William Jr. and Karen Wells, Eden Prairie, MN, Steven and Janice Wells, Des Moines, IA and Andre and Marcella Wells, Mason City, IA. Grandchildren include Keisha Wells, Des Moines, IA, Stephanie Wells, Houston, TX., William III (Wes) Wells, Crystal, MN, Winston Wells (Newark, N.J.) and Isiah Wells, Chicago, IL., Andre Jr., Adrian and Ashley Wells, Des Moines, IA. Five great-grandchildren also survive William.

Beyond his family, William was loved by many and carried with him at all times his trademark friendly and engaging presence. A warm smile and a good joke were with him as he greeted those who he knew or even strangers.

William served in the U.S. Army during World War II, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant and retired from active employment at the Animal Disease Lab in Ames, IA. William was an excellent carpenter specializing in both wood and plastic products, loved to hunt, fish, and bowl and also loved sports. William was an active member in numerous clubs and organizations in Des Moines including the Royal Dukes Social Club of Des Moines. William attended The Cathedral Church of St. Paul.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 1, 2008, at Iles Funeral Homes- Dunn’s Chapel.
