Des Moines

John E. Cooper, 85, passed away peacefully at his residence, 3801 Grand Avenue in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 9, 2009 at St. Augustin Catholic Church, of which he was a member. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery, with military honors.

John was born and raised in the Valley Junction area of Des Moines. After graduation, he served as an officer with the Merchant Marines during WWII. In 1951 John was united in marriage to Trientjy Everts. They raised four children in the rural Waukee area before moving to Des Moines in 2002. John retired from Hawkeye Security as a claims adjuster. He spent many years as a "jack of all trades" to his friends. He was well known for his generosity and kind works.

John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Trientje; son, Mark (Patti) Cooper of Des Moines; daughter, Terry (Martin) Hederman of St. Louis, MO; son, Robert (Donna) Cooper of Pleasant Hill; and son, Bart (Peggy) Cooper of Littleton, CO; nine grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Catherine Cooper; and his brothers, Jesse, Louis, George and Donald.

Visitation will begin after 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 8 at Iles Funeral Homes - Dunn's Chapel, where his family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Wesley Community Hospice, 3520 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312.
